Music in May – Woody Pines
One of the hottest bands on the American roots music circuit will be heading for a date in Llys Meddyg when they arrive here for their UK tour later this month. Woody Pines, from Asheville, North Carolina, won glowing reviews when they last toured Europe in 2010, and return - by popular demand. In recent months they took the New Orleans Mardi Gras by storm and were voted one of the stand-out acts at the massive SXSW extravaganza in Austin, Texas. The band has been winning accolades aplenty and praise from some of the giants of the Stateside scene. And after seeing them perform at Nelsonville Folk & Blues Festival in Ohio, Billy Joe Shaver, the top gun Outlaw Country legend declared: “They’re the best damn band I’ve ever heard!” Legendary BBC Radio 2 presenter Bob Harris declared himself a fan and told listeners to his show he thought they were “superb”. What can you expect? An intoxicating blend of rural and urban stringband, country blues, ragtime and jug band music. Bring it on.
